How to Apply for Financial Aid

Undergraduate Students

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

For priority consideration of limited State and Institutional grant funds, undergraduate students must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the following deadline based on their student type:

  • March 1 for first-time freshman and returning students
  • March 15 for fall transfer students
  • November 1 for spring transfer students

Please note that you may be selected to submit additional documentation once we receive your FAFSA. If selected, you will need to submit the required documentation as soon as possible. We cannot guarantee funding from limited state and institutional funds will be available by the time we receive your documentation.

Virginia Alternative State Aid Application (VASA)

Virginia residents who are undocumented, have DACA status, or are otherwise ineligible for the FAFSA may file the Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application instead.

George Mason's official VASA priority filing deadline for the 2025-26 aid year is March 1.

Awarding for prospective freshmen and new transfer students will begin when FAFSA data becomes available to George Mason in March. Returning students will be awarded in June after the annual Satisfactory Academic Progress review at the end of the spring term.

Graduate Students

Newly accepted graduate students will be notified about aid on a rolling basis as they complete their application for admissions.  Continuing graduate students will be notified of aid eligibility for the following year in early June.

To be considered for aid, George Mason University requires ALL students to submit a valid FAFSA and all other required documents four (4) weeks prior to the end of the term for which aid is requested.
