For this year’s University Life Gives Back: Summer Day of Service on July 27, 162 members of the George Mason University community registered for 14 in-person and six virtual projects.
Designed to provide Mason faculty and staff with the opportunity to make a positive difference and give back to our communities, the projects included making kits for Generation Hope scholars, mulching the trail at the EDGE, working with Animal Welfare League of Arlington and Fairfax County Humane Society, building a play element at the Child Development Center, chalking the sidewalks and painting rocks to spread around campus with messages of kindness and hope for the Mason Chooses Kindness initiative, and spending time organizing the LGBTQ+ Resource Center Trans Closet, among others.
There was also “create your own project” opportunity.
“We realize that many folks have connections to other organizations and may have other areas of need or service possibilities,” said Amy Snyder, director of staff experience for University Life and a member of the planning committee.
Family and friends were encouraged to participate. Following the morning of service project, volunteers gathered at the Hub Corner Pocket for a social.
The Summer Day of Service is always the fourth Wednesday in July from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. with different projects each year. The next one will be July 26, 2023.
